The Rest Best lyrics / poem by James Barnett

Swirling in a symphony
Of luxury and regret
Surrounded by the prizes
Of wealth and largesse
Sinking in this feeling
Of empty and meaningless

Thinking of the miseries
Inflicted upon myself
Trying to navigate
Into a crystal clarity
Toiling away in the fields
Of mind-numbing obscurity

Stop the world
I wanna get off
This isn’t the ride I signed up for
What I’m resisting keeps on persisting
Why do I keep wishing
For what I don’t want
Take a chance
Time to dance
I can turn this all around
Tell the truth
And let loose
Get wishing instead for what I want
I give myself permission
To make the rest of my life
The best of my life

Where do I go from here
It’s such uncharted territory
Cutting through the jumble of words
Seeing if I can make sense of it all
Perhaps too inwardly focused
There’s other people around me, too
Other people besides me
Occupying space on this lonely globe

Stop the world
I wanna get off
This isn’t the ride I signed up for
What I’m resisting keeps on persisting
Why do I keep wishing
For what I don’t want
Take a chance
Time to dance
I can turn this all around
Tell the truth
And let loose
Get wishing instead for what I want
I give myself permission
To make the rest of my life
The best of my life

Looking for my own unique place
That special space only I can occupy
Haven’t found it yet
Though it seems like I’ve gotten
Close at times
More to experiment with, more to test
More to discover and explore
What chapter am I at
I’m further than the beginning of the book
My curiosity keeps me here
Life can be a real page turner now and then

Stop the world
I wanna get off
This isn’t the ride I signed up for
What I’m resisting keeps on persisting
Why do I keep wishing
For what I don’t want
Take a chance
Time to dance
I can turn this all around
Tell the truth
And let loose
Get wishing instead for what I want
I give myself permission
To make the rest of my life
The best of my life
