You Deserve to Be Here — Alive and Strong

Have you ever been discouraged? Have you ever felt like you don’t belong? Have you ever wondered why you’re here?

Of course, you have. Those are universal experiences to go through. It’s painful to experience discouragement, isolation, and not knowing your purpose. Yet somehow it looks to be necessary to have those difficult moments in life. They help make the happy moments that much sweeter and well-earned.

You are a precious gift. As you learn to unwrap yourself and reveal the awesomeness that you are, be encouraged. You do belong. And you do need to be here.

You deserve to be here — alive and strong. Remember that as you read these lyrics.

“Be Here” lyrics / poem by James Barnett

Here I am
A bucket of sobs
A crying mess
No shame in that
I must confess
I feel trapped
In agony
And sadness yet

I still stubbornly hold on
With each breath I fight for my life
I know what’s at stake
I want to live
The solution is action
Thinking isn’t enough

I deserve to be here
That’s a fact worth facing
I deserve to be here
That’s a fact worth facing
I deserve to be here
That’s a fact worth facing

And so I am
Greater than I think
Stronger than I know
More powerful than I realize
What does it take
To wake up to this
To be enlightened
Stay awake in such reality
Where I am truly free
And I help liberate
Others from the cave
The darkness that can enslave
If only we allow it to

I deserve to be here
That’s a fact worth facing
I deserve to be here
That’s a fact worth facing
I deserve to be here
That’s a fact worth facing
I deserve to be here
That’s a fact worth facing

With each day
I choose to see
My own value
This is me
I have my part to play
On the world stage
I have my lines to learn
With some room to improvise
Actions to take
Promises to make
I honor my word even if I cannot keep it

Good habits to create
And bad habits to break
A life by design
It’s still within reach
One that I love to experience
One that I’m finally proud of
One that I joyfully discover
It is my birthright
And now I claim it
Now I claim it
Now I claim it
Now I claim it

I deserve to be here
That’s a fact worth facing
I deserve to be here
That’s a fact worth facing
I deserve to be here
That’s a fact worth facing
I deserve to be here
That’s a fact worth facing

Worth facing
Worth facing
That’s a fact worth facing
Worth facing
Worth facing
That’s a fact worth facing
I face it
I face it
I’m worthy
I face it
I face it
I’m worthy
I’m worthy

  1. Well said, James. I see you looking in a mirror, especially at the last verse, looking at yourself straight in the eye, with confidence and love for yourself. Good for all of us to do!

    1. Maisie, what you said reminds me of what Jack Canfield calls the mirror exercise in his book “The Success Principles.” Before going to bed, look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself the victories of the day. At the end, stare into your eyes for about 30 seconds as you smile at yourself and then say “I love you.”

I’ve done the mirror exercise many times. It’s very useful — though it does take some getting used to.
